About

A documentary film festival is always of urgent need. In today’s age of audiovisual revolution and constant flow of information, the screening of creative documentaries is both a platform for the study and understanding of a rapidly developing world, and an active assessment and involvement in the numerous social changes around us. Despite shallow television rhetoric, a good documentary is first and foremost a vehicle of education that attempts to shape its recipient, urging him to think, discuss, wonder and question. Surpassing the narrow boundaries of information and popular science, the «creative treatment of reality» formulated through the analytical and critical perspective of contemporary documentarists, provides us with an opportunity to come into contact with a vast field of educational, artistic and recreational nature.

This is the field that the newly established non-profit making company Brave New Culture aims to explore via the organization of film festivals and related events, including the further expansion of the «Lemesos International Documentary Film Festival». Featuring a selection of new productions from the international film scene, the Lemesos International Documentary Film Festival is undoubtedly the main platform for the screening of contemporary, creative documentaries in Cyprus. Workshops and meetings organized within the framework of the festival, offer Cypriot professional directors and producers the opportunity to acquaint themselves with new currents and trends in the field and be updated on the prospects of funding and promotion of their own work in the European world.

All documentaries comprising this year’s festival are distinguished by the investigative, analytical, delightful and consciously mindful gaze of their creators.

A total of twelve films will be screened, ten of which are contemporary international productions, and most of which have been distinguished and/or awarded prizes in significant international festivals and competitions. Our intention is to always search for and find films of both cinematographic interest and innovative sociological approach. Thus we were led to compose a varied screening program consisting of films with diverse concepts of reality, recording unseen and often misunderstood aspects of the world, eavesdropping on History, society and the evolution of civilisation and culture.

Lemesos, an authentic sea-side town constantly on the verge of departure, expectation and waiting, is once again a fertile ground, a welcoming, and hospitable host that highlights creative documentary as a contemporary means of expression beyond visual platitudes, vogue performances and conformist readings.

The festival kicks-off with an excellent film from Bulgaria that deals with a small city in Eastern Europe which had never had the opportunity to escape the fall of communism partly because it suffers an almost year-round mosquito infestation. The festival’s opening ceremony that follows combines the projection of very rare archive material, given to us by the Film Archive of Cyprus, with contemporary electronic music performed by DJ Michel Fiala. The old and the new meet in an experimental and improvising game with time.

From Syria comes the film Dolls – A Woman from Damascus and it introduces us to the most famous doll of the Arab world while the film Don’t get me wrong stands out because of its sympathetic approach to the patients of a psychiatric hospital in Romania and its cinematic beauty. The latest film by the distinguished English director Kim Longinotto is about a school of children with serious psychological problems and violent behaviour. A film made with the usual observational style of Longinotto that allows space and time to the characters in order to unfold their stories.

In recent years documentaries from Denmark have won some of the most important international awards and have attracted the attention of judges from all the main festivals. We have the pleasure to host three such films which are some of the best and most representative examples of this current. Phie Ambo’s Mechanical Love examines the relationship between robots and humans while the film by Pernille Rose Gr?nkj?r The Monastery – Mr. Vig & the Nun tells the story of an eccentric 82 year old bachelor and a young nun from Russia who becomes part of his life. This is a truly wonderful film where the filmic style of the director complies completely with the pure, spiritual, and tender characters of the protagonists. The third film from Denmark is the award winning documentary Enemies of Happiness by Eva Mulvad. From the very first shot of the film an exciting tale of resistance and personal courage emerges in a country devastated by war and poverty. Through the narration of a very intense and personal story, the director manages to show us the complex political situation and culture of Afghanistan in the post-Taliban era.

The Netherlands is represented with the film Dinner with Murakami, a poetic portrait of the magical world of the enigmatic Japanese author Haruki Murakami, filmed with mastery and confidence by a talented and an up and coming director.

The biggest and most important documentary film festival in the world is that of Amsterdam, known as IDFA. In 2007 the festival celebrated 20 years of ‘life’ and the organizers have asked the public to vote the 20 best films shown in these 20 years. N?madak TX from Spain was voted in second place. This is a film with wonderful visuals, great music and experiences in intriguing places around the globe that contribute to an exciting and mysterious journey. This is a really special music documentary which we will also have the chance to enjoy at the festival.

From Greece we are hosting Mr. Leonard and the travelling cinema by Nikos Theodosiou. The film is a journey in the fantastic world of wondering cinema projectionists that ran through the Greek rural areas bringing the magic of the 7th art to every village. The ten-minute film Merely a Smell from Lebanon transmits, without music or excessive gestures, and in just five shots, the anguish of war and death, while the Spanish film The Tailor introduces us to the daily universe of a tailor from Pakistan who is trying to survive in his tiny shop somewhere in Barcelona. From Cyprus we have Shushu by Diomedes Kofteros. In his directing debut, Koufteros presents in a very natural and convincing way the two worlds of Ozkan who at night transforms to Shushu, the well-known professional drag queen of Kyrenia. The festival closes with a film that deals with the punk music scene that prevailed in the last years of East Germany.

Screenings start at 20:30 and the entrance is free for the public.
